Studying Japanese takes a lot of courage. After all, learning not only the grammar but as much as 3 different writing systems is quite the task. Despite students being initially nervous when taking a Japanese course, our sensei Yuuka-san has found that by encouraging learners to speak a lot of Japanese early during their studies will translate into gaining sufficient confidence about what they are capable of during the course.

Why did you choose to be a Japanese teacher?

Because I like teaching Japanese and I hope that by doing so I am helping and motivating students to visit and enjoy the many beautiful places Japan has to offer.
‍

What do you like the most about being a teacher?

I like seeing my student’s Japanese get better.
‍

What is the most challenging thing about teaching Japanese?

I think that overall, the Japanese language has some straightforward grammar. However, there are different nuances that are a bit challenging both for teachers to explain and for students to understand.
‍

What do you think is the most difficult thing for students about learning Japanese?

The Japanese language has honorifics (Keigo). Although it is not required for foreigners to speak using Keigo, it is important for them to understand it. In my experience, students can struggle learning these honorifics.
‍

What do you think is the easiest thing for students about learning Japanese?

Once you have reached a meaningful level of knowledge in the language, then you will be able to easily learn new words and slangs by simply watching Japanese TV shows and other media. This learning just comes naturally without much effort.

How do you motivate your students to learn?

By encouraging them to speak a lot of Japanese in our classes, eventually they gain sufficient confidence about what they are capable of doing and that motivation comes from within.
‍

What advice do you have for people who would like to learn Japanese?

First of all, let's learn hiragana so that you become capable of reading Japanese! By doing so, when you go to Japan, you will be able to read and understand the sign boards and menus, and you will have more fun learning overall.
‍

Have you tried learning other languages? Which ones?

I have learned English, Korean, and Chinese before.
‍

What is the Japanese food that you would recommend to students?

I recommend Natto which is a traditional food in Japan. It's a bit stinky but the taste is awesome. Please try to eat it with white rice.
‍

What is the Japanese food that you would NOT recommend to students?

Nothing -she seems very confident anything you try will be delicious -!
‍
